Habitat: central highlands of Papua New Guinea
Status: Near Threatened
This magnificent bird of paradise is the Ribbon-tailed Astrapia (Astrapia mayer) and it holds the title for the longest tail feathers in relation to body size of any bird! Males’ bodies are up to 32 cm long, while the tail on the other hand, can reach lengths of up to 1 meter!
Don’t think these guys let those sexy tail feathers go to waste either. Males are polygamous and definitely share the goods with each of its admirers. They flick and wave their tails in the air while bouncing from tree to tree to try and attract mate(s). If you’d like to see a video of this, go here and you can see several male Ribbon-tailed Astrapias shakin’ those tail feathers!
