The Periander Swordtail – Rhetus periander – is a true jewel of the rainforest. It is a common butterfly, but is also very elusive. Though, if you do happen upon one it would be easy to spot! Unless of course it had its wings folded up (shown above) because then it appears to be much like a dead leaf.I’m a real fan of the close up shots of the butterfly wing scales. It’s amazing to see how intricately woven each color is! Take a look at the Sunset Moth for another fabulously magnified scale picture.
