Habitat: Western Ghats in India
Status: Endangered

This bizarre-o creature is the Purple Frog  or Pig-nosed Frog (Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis) which was discovered in 2003. I believe it has a major self-esteem problem. I mean, it’s got a lot of physical issues that it’s not too proud of. Let me explain.

While its body really resembles that of a normal frog, the Purple Frog’s physique takes on a much rounder, plumper appearance. It’s purple skin color also deviates from the normally accepted “green frog” standard. It’s head is much too small for its body and its nose is shaped like a pig’s snout. You can imagine the teasing that went on during middle school.

The Purple Frog is so embarrassed by its strange outward appearance that it spends most of the year underground, only surfacing for two weeks during monsoon season, when (supposed) mating takes place. I guess it never really goes that well since the species is listed as endangered… (ba dum chhhh).

To make matters worse, the Purple Frog doesn’t even sound like a frog. It sounds just like a chicken! Watch the video below to hear exactly what I mean. *Ribbit* er, *Cluck!*
