In 2009, this new species of Duck-billed Knifefish (Compsaraia samueli) was discovered cruising around the Amazon basin.
It definitely looks like something out of a science fiction novel, doesn’t it? But instead of using its long “beak” to suck souls out of humans (or whatever), the males use them as battle instruments. They’ll fence with each other using those crooked shnozes – females have regular, slender mouths (see pic #3).

Besides their bizarre looks, the Duck-billed Knifefish also has the power of electricity! Cursing through their eel-like bodies, runs an electric current used for defense against other deadly creatures of the Amazon River. How exhilarating!
