Habitat: endemic to the Carpathian Mountains in Eastern Europe
Status: Not Evaluated
Ever seen a blue slug before? Well, you have now! These are Carpathian blue slugs (Bielzia coerulans), large land molluscs that reach lengths of 100 – 140 mm – which is big for slug standards.
They vary in shades from dark, navy blue all the way to a more turquoise color. Young slugs are yellowish brown with dark lateral bands.
You can find these guys sliding their way across coniferous or deciduous forest leaf litter – typically under dead logs. Obviously, that’s the best place for a slug to be.
This and the banana slug are probably my two favorite land mollusks that I’ve posted on so far…. although, the semi-slug and painted snails are pretty freaking cool too.
