The Skinny Pig is an almost hairless breed of Guinea pig. Skinny Pigs typically have hair on their muzzles, feet and legs, but are hairless over the rest of their body. They were the result of a mutation and were commonly used in laboratory experiments. However, now they are a popular “designer” breed of guinea pig.

The Abyssinian guinea pig, a popular breed, has a coat made up of rosettes. Rosettes appear on each shoulder, over the back, on each hip and across the guinea pig’s rear. The 1.5 inch thick coat is coarse and dense.

A werewolf skinny is a skinny pig that is born with fur drifted all over it’s body. Occasionally, as a werewolf skinny grows, the fur will fall out but that is never guaranteed. A werewolf skinny’s fur is very fine, and is sometimes grouped so close together that it looks like a skinny pig, is a furry pig until you look closely! The only place the a werewolf skinny will not get fur on, is it’s belly!
Teddy Guinea Pig

The White Crested guinea pig breed has a single white rosette on top of the head. A somewhat rare breed, no other white can be found in the coat of show quality White Cresteds.

Once called the Angora, the Peruvian guinea pig breed has a coat several inches long that drags on the ground. The soft, dense hair grows from a center part down the guinea pig’s back. The hair requires daily grooming.

They recently posted the second picture of a skinny on CuteOverload remarking that it looks like a mini hippo :)Everyone fell in love with it but when I went to find more pics of skinnies they weren’t close to as cute as what you have here. When I had an Abyssinian I read a few books on guineapigs and none mentioned skinnies or werewolves. Perhaps because they weren’t around back then (1990s).

I have had guinea pigs for many years, and I’ve only been peed on a handful of times. They generally give a warning of starting to gnaw on you when they need to go.

This is mostly interesting though the only breeds that could qualify as ‘bizarre breeds’ were the skinny and werewolf skinny, while the others some were more uncommon than others they’re hardly bizarre.

  • Anonymous

I want a skinny pig! I love all of them, though! Cute rundown of the types – thanks!

I was surprised to see Abys, Texels, Satins and crested GPs featured as “bizarre”. No mention of the Baldwin GP, either!

Never saw a teddy bear GP ’til this post! The little grey baby featured is OMG, TOO CUTE!!!

The peruvian and the texel look insane, and probably don’t like having to carry around that huge hair.

  • Jess

I’d never seen the werewolf type of hairless before, interesting!
However, I have to point out, there is an error here. The first Abyssinian picture is a stuffed animal, that hair is clearly synthetic and you would be able to see the nostrils on a real guinea pig. Also, guinea pig ears are slightly ‘peanut’ shaped with a kind of divot in the middle of the edge of the ear, the stuffed animals ear is perfectly round.
Furthermore, an image search lead here- http://www.rowanbears.co.uk/guineapigs.php

Sorry, it stuck out to me so I had to point it out!

  • Debbie Maresuke

I have one of each type of guinea pig. the only types i don’t have are the werewolf skinny pig and the texel guinea pig. Luckily, one of my friends’ Texel guinea pigs just had babies so i should be getting my texel baby soon! i love my collection of cuties! Guinea pigs make great pets!

  • Denise

We run a rabbit and guinea pig rescue and have come across all the breeds that you have mentioned here, Although we have not had any skinny pigs come in we do have skinny carriers, the father of these two was a skinny pig and he was lovely. We have a texal, teddy, peruvian and abbys, i have to say the crested is the most common guinea pig so is not that bizzare. We also have swiss and lunkarya which are very rare breeda in our care. you need to update this page and do a little more research into what really are rare and bizzare breeds!

I got me my first cavy ( another name for a guinea pig in case you live under a rock) from petco but I adopted it and she loves me so much she will actually kiss me on the lips she is so frickin cute

  • Kat

Please use caution if buying the hairless breeds. They are quite sensitive to weather etc. And because so much of their energy goes to keeping themselves warm, they eat a ton!

  • Paula

    Hey,marisa here on July 13
    I love my guinea pig

  • Elenor

    love the facts:)

  • Nic

I have a pig with short, wiry hair, and it is half black, half white, but I can’t figure out the breed. It also has a cowlick on its back. I don’t know if it’s hair will get any longer, because it is only 2 or 3 months old. Can anyone tell what it is just by the description?

    • Bee

it sounds to me like you may have a rex mix breed. Rex have the wiry hair but straight short hair and if it’s got a cowlick it’s probably got an abyssinian parent or grandparent, which also accounts for the two colors, although colors vary among Rex’s as well

  • Andrew Parker

That second skinny one looks like a tiny hippo
